MAC response to Michael Savage attack on parents of children with autism |
|
Michael Savage's insensitive remarks showed a total lack of understanding of the daily challenges faced by children and adults with autism spectrum disorder, and the families that love them. That he does not recognize the neurological basis for a cognitive and developmental disorder like autism is breathtakingly ignorant. Parents, and families, of children with autism, as of children with all disabilities, are extraordinarily courageous, often having to give up careers or livelihoods in order to care for their children. Each parent and family contributes far more to the stability and well-being of our society than Mr. Savage, whose contemptible antics in the civic square of public discourse are more akin to a child throwing a temper tantrum to get attention. We would suggest that Mr. Savage spend a day in the life of a parent whose child has autism, but he is not worthy of wearing the shoes of any of the parents we work with at MAC. |
