Students who are excluded from school have their education disrupted. While many students who are excluded do in fact pose a threat to safety or disrupt the learning environment of the school, too many students are excluded inappropriately or in violation of their rights. Zero tolerance laws and regulations over the past decade have enabled school districts to exclude students for minor offenses. The number of exclusions have increased dramatically, especially for children age 10 and under, and continue to affect black and Latino students disproportionately.
MAC works to minimize the number of students excluded by representing individual children and, more importantly, by changing laws and regulations and school practices so that schools and teachers can be given the supports they need to keep both regular and special needs children in their classrooms with an opportunity to succeed.
