With Boston special education students missing classes because of late buses, two advocacy organizations seek state intervention

MAC filed a joint complaint alongside Greater Boston Legal Services regarding the Boston school system’s failure to provide timely and safe bus service. Buses have frequently dropped off students after the scheduled time, or failed to pick up students at all, causing children to miss entire days of school.

While this is challenging for all students, the inadequate transportation system affects children with disabilities disproportionately. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education flagged this inequity five months ago, additionally noting that even when children were able to get to school, they did not receive adequate special education services.

Children with disabilities are placed on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and door to door transportation is often a part of their IEPs. When bus services are not fulfilled, it means that services promised via binding legal documents are breached. And when children are unable to get to school, they are unable to receive the special education services they are entitled to.

As the complaint notes, every day these transportation concerns are not being resolved is another day these children are being harmed. Read the full article at The Boston Globe below.
