The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act |

It was to help homeless children in the spirit of “leave no child behind” that the education portion of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act was re-authorized in 2002, to ensure “equal access to the same free, appropriate public education, including a public pre-school education, as provided to other children and youths.” The law requires that states provide the following: 1) education stability- the right to stay in their school of origin2) transportation back to the school of origin; 3) immediate enrollment if the family chooses to enroll in the school in their new community; and 4) other support services, including special education, pre-school and for teens living on their own. |
