Massachusetts Advocates for Children Congratulates Mayor Kim Janey

It is a historic day in Boston. Massachusetts Advocates for Children (MAC) congratulates Mayor Kim Janey as she becomes the first Black person and the first woman to serve as Mayor of the City of Boston.

“Mayor Janey has a background as a strong advocate for education equity. Boston’s future as a city known for innovation and creativity depends upon providing all of its children access to quality educational opportunities,” shared Jacqui Bowman, Executive Director of Greater Boston Legal Services, Inc. (GBLS) and Clerk of MAC’s Board of Directors, “We are hopeful and excited about what Mayor Janey’s leadership can mean for the future of Boston.”

Given the Mayor’s long career of service to the city’s families, we see her appointment as an important opportunity for Boston’s children and youth. We look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Janey as we did for the 17 years that she served as Senior Project Director of MAC’s Boston School Reform Project, leading efforts to advocate for systemic policy reforms to ensure equity and excellence in education for students in Boston Public Schools.

Mayor Janey takes office at a critical and unprecedented moment in Boston’s and our country’s history. The challenging process of finally controlling the COVID-19 virus and then recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic would be an extraordinary challenge for any Mayor. Getting children safely back to school will certainly test the new Mayor’s commitment to equity in a difficult time. MAC wishes Mayor Janey all the best in her new role and commits to stand with her in the struggle for a great education for all Boston’s children and youth.
