Needham man biking 100 kilometers for Massachusetts Advocates for Children

When local nonprofit Massachusetts Advocates for Children (MAC) announced their virtual 5K fundraiser, the “Run, Walk, and Roll to Equity”, Arturo Perez decided to go the extra mile – an extra 59 miles to be exact, for a total of 100 kilometers.

“When I sent out the request for support, [one of my friends] said that he thought I could do 100 kilometers, which is 62 miles, and that he would give me a dollar per kilometer. So he put a challenge in front of me, and well I guess once you do that you can’t really back out,” shares Arturo.

MAC’s mission is to remove barriers to educational and life opportunities for children and youth. All proceeds from the event will support MAC’s COVID-19 recovery work, which includes a free Helpline, free monthly webinars informing parents of their special education rights during COVID-19, and policy-level advocacy to secure equitable access to educational support for children whose education has been disrupted during the pandemic.

“I really will be pushing myself hard to get that distance, it’s a lot more than the longest I’ve ever done… it’s sort of gotten everybody excited to help with the fundraising and chip in, so that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day,” shares Arturo.
